The campus of Kauai Community College was bustling during spring break with ʻOhana Waʻa – Imi Naʻauao 2016, a collaborative program among various voyaging organizations from around the state.
In conjunction with the arrival of the voyaging canoe Hikianalia, over 75 potential crew members engaged in training in various aspects of seamanship. The participants were joined by 16 students and two faculty members of the Japan National Maritime Technology Colleges.
The crew members lived on campus as if on a voyage, utilizing classrooms, bathrooms and showers, and cooking facilities. Through the support of the Imiloa Astronomy Center of UH Hilo, a portable planetarium along was made available to participants. The program also included a movie night that was open to the community which featured the documentary “Papa Mau.”
The apiary at KCC, together with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, is implementing a program to protect Kauai’s honey bees from catastrophic varroa mite infestation. Dr. Georgeanne Purvinis is presenting the work of KCC’s apiary at the Island Sustainability Conference in Guam, April 11-15.
Kauai is one of the last varroa-free places on earth. The apiary at KCC is also helping the Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation Program by contributing bee larvae to feed baby birds. The collaborative project is saving two endangered honeycreepers on Kauai, the ‘akikiki and ‘akeke‘e, from extinction.
The college’s Instrumental Music Program presents three nights of great music during the upcoming weeks, starting with the KCC Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, April 16 at 7 p.m.
The KCC Wind Symphony and Kauai Youth Honor Band will perform on Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m. and the KCC Symphony Orchestra takes the stage on Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. All concerts will be held in the KCC Performing Arts Center.
