There will be a bon dance at the West Kauai Hongwanji Mission, Waimea Temple, said Sarah Date.
Bon dance practices have been taking place on Thursdays at the WKHM, Hanapepe Temple social hall, where the participants recently celebrated the birthday of longtime instructor, Mrs. Akiyo Nakaya.
“Many of our WKHM, Waimea Temple members feel we are not having a bon dance,” Date said. “We will be having a bon dance on June 24 and 25 with dancing to start at 7:30 p.m. on both nights.”
Date said the bon dance at the WKHM, Waimea Temple, 4675 Menehune Road, will also feature a special children and adult taiko group from Maui during its intermission.
“We do want many attendees at the bon dance since a special Zenshin group plan to perform at our intermission on both nights,” Date said.
Miyamoto said the West Kauai Hongwanji has sponsored the beginners bon dance class at the Hanapepe Temple for the past nine years with the number of participants growing from a dozen to more than 75 dancers.
“Every year, we get about a dozen brand new, or ‘don’t know anything’ students who wish to learn bon dancing,” Miyamoto said. “We get students from all backgrounds, religion and ethnicity. They all just love to dance.”
Bon dance practice for the West Kauai Hongwanji Mission started on Feb. 4 and will continue each Thursday evening starting at 6 p.m. at the WKHM, Hanapepe Temple social hall.
