NAWILIWILI — Karla Bollmann is back on the fashion scene following a break to raise her sons.
“I started designing in 2003,” said Bollmann of the Karlota’s Tropical Clothing & Accessories line. “I took a break to raise my sons, now 10 and 5 years old. They are a little older now so I came back, starting in 2013.”
Bollmann was one of several Kauai designers whose work was featured on the runway before an enthusiastic audience of several hundred appreciative fans, photographers, video crews and dignitaries on Saturday night during the 4th annual Hawaii Fashion Week at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club.
Sha Ali Ahmad, a fashion designer of international acclaim, was the star of the evening, showing off his Ahmad Couture ‘16 line. He has spent the last several months with the show starting in Florida and making stops in California before closing the tour on Kauai.
The start of the AC ‘16 tour pulled in Natasha Curtis, one of Florida’s acclaimed photographers, who joined the show for the task of recording scenes around Kauai and the fashions for editorial use in a magazine.
Monica Kawakami of the HFW committee designed the show to include not only the Walk of Fame, but also segments featuring Kauai’s beauty queens, a special presentation by Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala under Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin, and some talented Kauai singing performers.
Hawaii Fashion Week is owned by Ahmad and Marynel Valenzuela.
