HANALEI — The 36th annual Haena to Hanalei Eight Mile Run/Walk is Saturday.
About 500 people are expected for the popular race put on by the Hanalei Canoe Club that features one of the most scenic courses in the country as it winds along Kuhio Highway next to the ocean.
Haena to Hanalei also includes some tough climbs in the first four and a half miles before runners can enjoy a nice downhill stretch and the final few flat miles to the finish line next to Black Pot Beach.
The race is competitive, as it attracts many of the island’s fastest runners. It’s also friendly and draws many looking to enjoy camaraderie and scenery on a North Shore morning.
Due to the race, the highway will be closed to vehicles from Ke‘e Beach to Anae Road in Hanalei from 5:30 to 9 a.m. Residents in the area are urged to plan ahead if they need to drive anywhere during those hours.
The club is spreading word of the highway closure via a reader board in Hanalei, as well as through the media.
There is also a 5K run and a one-mile run for kids.
There will be free shuttles leaving from the Hanalei Pier from 4:45 a.m. to 5:45 a.m.
The eight-mile race begins at 7 a.m., walkers go at 6. The 5K and youth runs are at 7.
When it’s over, there is a festive awards ceremony and pancake breakfast.
Cost for the eight-mile run or the 5K is $40, and $50 on race day. It’s $10 for the youth run. Entry fee includes a T-shirt and breakfast.
Race packet pick-up and late registration is 3 to 6 p.m Friday at the Hanalei Canoe Club or at the Hanalei Pier starting 4:45 on race day.
Online registration ends Wednesday.
