LIHUE — Kalani Vierra and Krystl Apeles, the defending tandem surfing world champions, were on hand Saturday at King Auto Center during the launch of the Kauai Lifeguards Association 4th Wave Celebration.
Vierra and Apeles, who took time to sign autographs, sell shirts and distribute free stickers, are on tap to begin their defense in July during the first of three competitions.
The first competition takes place in Biscarrose, France, and will be followed by two other competitions, one in August at Waikiki Beach on Oahu, and the final one in December at Makaha Beach, also on Oahu.
The tandem pair — sponsored by the Kauai Athletic Club, Happy Hour Design, Go Pro, Kona Red, Bomber Eyewear, Honolua Surf Co, Puka Surf Co. and Koloa Rum Co. — were on hand with commemorative shirts as a fundraiser to help with their tour. They said there are two more appearances scheduled before they leave for the first competition.
The KLA 4th Wave Celebration is a benefit concert for Kauai Ocean Safety and will take place Oct. 22 from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club.
The award-winning buffet, Quicky Bingo, Alaska Airlines’ Dancing in the Stars, a silent and live auction, on-stage games and prizes, and Augie T’s Joker’s Wild are some of the highlights of the star-studded evening which will feature Amy Gilliam, Makua Rothman, Kalapana, John Rivera Trio and Tina Marie among the lineup of entertainers.

During the Surf’s Up promotion taking place at King Auto Center, a portion of proceeds from select vehicles sold through the end of May will be presented to the KLA.
