HANALEI — Waipa by the Sea in Hanalei Bay will be filled with waterslides, games, a bonfire and a 40-foot screen today.
That’s because educational activists for Kauai’s Bill 2491 will be there to offer the latest details on the pesticide disclosure measure, currently being challenged in federal court.
“Sunday is a combination of a community gathering and a showing of the movie ‘Aina,’” said organizer Jason Donovan. “It’s a 23-minute film about the chemical companies and that stuff here. It’s Hollywood quality, beautiful and powerful.”
Bill 2491 is a measure that requires greater public disclosure of pesticide use, as well as some no-spray protection zones around schools and other places.
It was passed by the Kauai County Council but Dupont, Syngenta and Agrigenetics Inc., three of the world’s largest agrochemical companies, challenged the law.
Donovan said he’s decided to throw the event together to raise awareness and bring everyone up to speed on the pesticide disclosure bill before the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals takes the lawsuit under review on June 15.
The event kicks off with Sunday Funday from 2 to 6 p.m. with activities for kids.
At 6 p.m., several speakers will provide the latest on Bill 2491, including Kauai Councilman Gary Hooser and Fern Rosenstiel, Hawaii state representative candidate for Kauai District 14.
The film “Aina” will be shown about 7 p.m.
The event is free.
