WAILUA — Allisen Corpuz of the Punahou girls golf team was bitten by a bogey on the Wailua Golf Course No. 9, Monday at the opening round of the David S. Ishii Foundation Hawaii High School Athletic Association 2016 girls state championships.
But the bogey did not set her back as she crossed with a one-under 35 after picking up birdies on Holes 1 and 6. She added another birdie on No. 15 to finish two-under 70 to lead the Punahou girls team to an opening day 219, 13 strokes ahead of Mid-Pacific Institute and Iolani who are tied for second at 232.
Corpuz leads the field with her two-under 70, two strokes ahead of Mariel Galdiano, also from the Punahou team.
The Kauai High School girls of the host Kauai Interscholastic Federation sit at ninth place with 269, the day’s round being led by Taryn Taguma who birdied the Wailua No. 9, triggering applause from Kellie Pleas of Hokuala, the Kapaa High School coach who was assisting with scorekeeping chores for the live scoring.
“The girls are doing good at keeping up the pace,” Pleas said. “So far, no cards issued for slow play. I shouldn’t show my preferences, but Taryn did well on that hole.”
Taguma was joined by Jaelin Ishikawa of Baldwin High School and Chloe Waters of Kamehameha-Kea‘au in picking up a stroke at No. 9.
She also leads the Kauai girls’ scoring at eight-over 80 followed by Tyra Kiana Oshiro at 92, Kiri Naomi Oshiro at 97, and Dillyn Sakai at 98.
Waimea High School’s Samantha Nichols is tied for 29th place with Sara Keppel and Briana Finau at 85. Kapaa’s Samantha Coloma finished the opening round at 106.
