Cheyanne Tannery, who graduated from Kauai High School in May, returned from the High School Rodeo State finals with her second consecutive state title in the pole bending event.
Tannery was one of four participants from Kauai who traveled to Parker Ranch on the Big Island to compete in the state rodeo finals which wrapped up last weekend.
The Kauai High School graduate topped all three go’s in pole bending en route to her state title. She continued through the competition to finish third in barrel racing, and fourth in goat tying.
Kiara Ruiz, another of the Kauai High School Rodeo Association participants, finished second in the state for breakaway roping and goat tying, edging out Tannery in that event. Ruiz ewas fourth in pole bending.
Coryssa Silva finished on top in the first go of barrel racing. She also copped a pair of second places in the first two outings of pole bending to end up fifth in the state for pole bending. She also copped an eighth place in goat tying, and despite her strong opening run, ended ninth in the barrel racing. She rounded out her rodeo with a 10th place in breakaway roping.
Kobey Blackstad, the fourth KHSRA competitor, placed fourth in the Po‘o Wai U, a uniquely Hawaii rodeo event, and a sixth place in tie down roping following clean runs through the event.
With the state title, Tannery will head to Gilette, Wyoming for the National Finals High School Rodeo in July. She will wrap up the circuit by going to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she will join the college’s rodeo team.
