WAILUA — Leeanna Carvalho of the pink team said they were already winners Saturday during the 4th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Soccer Event played out at the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Sports Park in Wailua.
“We have the right color,” Carvalho said. “This year, Emily Medeiros, the organizer for this event, added the hat. So, now, without even going into the finals, we’re already winners.”
Medeiros, of the Kauai Island Ladies Adult Soccer, said there were 46 young women who participated in Saturday’s event.
“This is the biggest turnout yet,” Medeiros said. “We could form five teams. We are still tallying the funds, because besides the minimum donation from the participants, there were people stopping by to just donate. This is getting bigger each year.”
She also allowed people to form their own teams.
Throughout the morning, the green team with Futsal Kauai coach Mytra McKeague had been undefeated. During the quarterfinals, the green team met up with the pink squad. The combination pitted a mother, Laura Vegas of the green team, against her daughter, Malu Vegas, who tended goal for the pinkshirts.
“You gotta cheer for the pink,” said Chandra Bertsch, a player who has been on the field twice before. “It’s good fun to come out and play with the girls. You do it for good people and it’s for a good cause. I’m happy to be able to support this.”
