PUHI — The future of Kauai will be discussed when the Kauai Planning and Action Alliance has its annual meeting Tuesday.
The KPAA will bring the public up to speed on two main initiatives: the Keiki to Career Program and the Kauai Tourism Strategic Plan, said Diane Zachary, president.
“Keiki to Career is probably one our largest programs,” she said. “It brings together schools and other agencies to help young people improve their future. There’s an emphasis on families eating meals together and making the high school and post-secondary curriculum relevant.”
Keiki to Career is a collaboration of 35 community partners who help young people enjoy bright futures.
Other priorities for the Keiki to Career Program are reading for life, a 2016 Kauai Youth Report and a Creating a Family Forum. KPAA will also talk about updates to the Kauai Tourism Strategic Plan.
“Our main goal is to make sure the quality of life of residents isn’t impacted by visitors,” she said.
Anna-Lisa Okoye, chief operating officer of The Kohala Center on Hawaii Island, will be the guest speaker. Okoye is at the forefront of sustainable ag land programs that can be implemented on Kauai, Zachary said.
“It’s about increasing self-reliance, so it’s the perfect opportunity to bring her here,” she said. “She will be able to talk specifically about programs that we can put in place on Kauai.”
The meeting will also be a way to welcome Marion Paul, the new president and CEO starting in July.
The event is free, but space is limited. People interested in attending are asked to register online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/Q7MQJJ6.
Zachary expects 50 to 60 people to attend.
The meeting will be 3 to 5 p.m. at the Kauai Community College cafeteria.
