LIHUE — The Kauai chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is taking a couple of chances to celebrate its 12th annual International Surfing Day. Friday, the organization hosted a beach cleanup with guests and staff members from the Sheraton Kauai Resort, and Monday, leaders of Kauai’s chapter will have an informational booth set up at Kalapaki Beach.
Robert Zelkovsky, media coordinator for the Kauai chapter of Surfrider, said chapters nationwide usually host small surf contests or beach days to celebrate International Surfing Day, but Kauai’s chapter is usually out picking up trash.
“Our chapter tends to be more of a working chapter,” Zelkovsky said.
On Monday, the actual day set aside to honor surfing, Zelkovsky and Barbara Wiedner, vice chairwoman of Kauai Surfrider, will be at Kalapaki Park from 5 to 7 p.m. distributing information and signing folks up to join the organization.
“We’re also always looking for volunteers to come to cleanups, to help monitor water quality, and to just have their eyes open when they go to the beach,” Zelkovsky said. “One of the little suggestions we have is to take a bag with you to the beach and pick up 10 pieces of trash to take home with you.”
Those who want to join the organization will have the opportunity to purchase a “Beach in a Bag” at the booth for $35, which includes a Surfrider hat and a fold-up, resuable bag.
