POIPU — Kauai Waveriders took advantage of the south swell, hosting its Kauai Waverider Series meet at Shipwreck’s Beach fronting the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa.
Kawehi Louis Diamond was one of the surfers waiting to hit the water Sunday, watching Sammy Morrentino rip through the Men’s Open Pro division.
“The waves are dying,” Louis Diamond said. “Saturday, the waves were beautiful and I wish we could have ridden. There are only two of us in our division, myself and Ashley Hori, and I think we ride real soon. I’m hoping the waves come back.”
Morrentino, closing out the year with wins in three divisions — pro men, drop-knee and stand-up — during the final event of the Kellogg’s IBA Hawaii Bodyboarding Tour, was in the water in the men’s open pro heat, soaking up points and mileage over the field as sets broke in the 5 to 10 feet range under 10 to 20 knot winds.
Justin Medeiros had just come out of the water for his heat.
“It’s kind of hard out there,” he said. “But the surf’s good.”
The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory over the weekend for the south-facing shores of all of the Hawaiian Islands, the south swell bringing advisory level water, including strong breaking waves and strong currents into today.
