LIHUE — With summer upon us, the Kauai Police Department is urging motorists to drive safely and responsibly.
The department will be increasing enforcement efforts across the island, checking for those driving under the influence of intoxicants and other traffic violations.
“We want to ensure that people enjoy their graduation parties and holiday celebrations,” said Police Chief Darryl Perry. “Parents, please speak to your children about the dangers of drinking and driving and give them the option to call home before getting into a car with an intoxicated driver. It is better to get a late-night phone call from your child than a police officer.”
There have been five traffic-related fatalities on Kauai so far this year and a total of three in 2015. According to KPD, three of this year’s traffic fatalities involved drugs and/or alcohol.
“By warning motorists of the increased traffic enforcement and vehicle checkpoints, we hope to prevent unsafe driving before it occurs,” added Chief Perry. ”We all play a role in keeping our roads safe. Driving responsibly could save your life or the life of someone you love.”
