LIHUE — Kauai Bronco All Stars will be playing for the championship starting at 9 a.m. today at the Bronco Main Diamond at the Lihue County Park.
“We just got through playing a Technical Knockout game,” said Lance Kaneko, whose son Lono is on the Kauai Bronco All Star team. “So far, we’ve played three games, and won all three. In these types of tournament, you just have to keep winning.”
The Hawaii Region Protect Our Nation’s Youth state baseball tournament wraps up with these championship games which will take place at the Lihue County Park and the Pony division game being played at Vidinha Stadium. All championship games start at 9 a.m.
“We just got eliminated after losing Sunday night,” said Jay Koga, coach of the Kauai Pony All Stars. “We’re out.”
Maile Cox, whose husband John coaches on the Kauai Bronco team, said the Kauai Mustang 9, fielding a team for the first time during the tournament which opened Friday, lost their first encounter, but came back to win their second game before being eliminated in their third game.
Tyson Moises, coaching the Kauai Mustang 10, said they, too, were eliminated during Sunday games.
“We have at least one Kauai team making the finals,” Moises said. “We can come out to support them. They’re undefeated.”
The Kauai Bronco All Stars are coached by Kevin Akita, John Cox and Troy Shigematsu. Its members include Joshua Guarin, Jordan Andres, Bronze DeCosta, Joshua Ibaan, Toshi Cox, Bulla Ephan, Maka Shigematsu, Ryson Wa‘alani, Lono Kaneko, Jaden Domingsel, Isaiah Matsumura, Kash Akita, Kainalu Lazaro, and Max Wexler.
