No prior plans. No means of navigation. Just a group of buddies spontaneously driving up and down California’s coast and hitting the surf along the way.
“I’ve known (Josh Kerr). We both ride for Rusty. So, he called me and wanted me to come on a trip, and I said yes,” said pro surfer Dylan Goodale in a phone interview Thursday. “It was fun. I trust them. They’re two of the best in the world.”
Surfing Magazine recently released “Just Up The Coast,” a video which documented the road trip of a group of surfers led by pros Kerr and Damien Hobgood.
Goodale, from Hanalei, was also along for the trip. The Kauai native was filmed with Kerr, Hobgood and fellow surfer Oliver Kurtz.
“It was two separate trips — one with another guy, Oliver, and the other was with me with Damien and Josh,” Goodale said. “It was a quick one week from up-and-down the coast. … Stopped in San Francisco and made our way back throughout the week.”
Cameras followed their adventure along California’s coast, which was filmed during February.
Goodale’s trip with Kerr and Hobgood started in San Diego, went up to San Francisco and back. Along the way, they stopped at spots such as Ocean Beach, Mavericks, Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara to hit the waves.
While the 13-minute video mostly features the surfers in the water, it also shows brief moments in-between, during the road-trip — including cleaning the RV’s windshield, cooking breakfast “with extra shells,” stopping to take in the sights, and sharing a few laughs as they navigate California’s roads and highways.
“The RV is pretty big,” Goodale said. “We all had our own bed. It was just good times. We were all drinking beers, just laughing. We had Netflix on during the drives. It was just fun. There was never a dull moment, for sure.”
Goodale attended the premiere last Wednesday at Surfing Magazine’s headquarters in Carlsbad, California. He said the event was a success.
“It was a pretty good turnout,” he said. “There was bunch of groms. It was held at a skatepark there, so there was a bunch of them skating. Then they turned it on, and everyone was pretty psyched. Everyone was happy.”
Goodale said he enjoyed watching the video and reflecting on the road trip.
“It was funny. It was a week long, but at the same time, everything happened so fast,” he said. “You kind of miss stuff, but you can go back and watch it. All those moments edited together; it’s pretty cool.”
He also said he’s received positive feedback from family and friends on Kauai about the video.
“I think my mom even posted something on Facebook. A couple of my friends texted me saying they watching it, and it looks like we scored,” he said. “It was a really good project, for sure.”
