European flair leads Supersonics

KALAHEO — Curtis Broyles was glad top see George Cojkovic on the court Tuesday night during the summer league boys Division 3 matchup at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.

“They know Mayson Broyles, my grandson, can shoot so they always put someone on him,” Curtis said. “Now we have George who comes from Europe for the summer. He wanted to play so now, the opponents have to spread their defense which loosens the pressure on Mayson.”

Gojkovic fired off a game-high 12 points to keep the Supersonics ahead of Papalina, 42-15.

Helping the cause, Mayson Broyles and Mare’yon Cromartie each netted nine points. Both players ignited in the second half, Mayson getting seven of his nine marks in the home stretch, and Cromartie getting all of his scores, including a three-ball, in the second half.

Bryce Fernandez finished with seven points, including a first-half trey, and Aden Ringor added three points in addition to his height advantage in the paint to fuel the win.

Jim Ehia topped the Papalina scoring with seven points followed by Cole Taba adding four points. Angie Gillman and Isaac Rego rounded out the effort with a pair each.

Earlier in the evening, Jazmine Kaleiohi finished with 12 points and Tori Daligcon added 10 points to lead Pono Blue, a Girls Division 1 team, to a 58-25 win over the Kaulupono White team, a Division 3 team playing up in Division 1.

Kaye Serapio fired off a three-ball en route to her 11 points to lead the Kaulupono White team with TJ Ramos, Braelyn Cayaban, and Kierstin Gummerus each adding four points.

The league games were held to just two matches because earlier, the California Bearcats, a team made up of junior varsity players from the Santa Fe Christian High School, took up the court for a practice session ahead of the Kauai Hoops Classic which tips off Thursday at four venues — the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, Island School, Kauai High School, and Kapaa High School.

The summer games will be suspended until after the tournament.
