KAPAA — A draft environmental assessment is being prepared for the repair or replacement of the Kapaa Stream Bridge, on Kuhio Highway near mile marker 10.
The U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration is developing the project in conjunction with the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
The bridge is the main focus of the proposed project, and the purpose is to improve the safety and reliability of the bridge by addressing its width, load capacity, railing and transitions, and bridge approaches.
The project also proposes to move the highway intersection at Mailihuna Road.
That would include roadway widening, lighting, signing, pavement markings, drainage, and traffic signal installation.
The DA was published July 23 and is available online at flh.flhwa.dot.gov/kapaa-stream.
According to USDOT, Federal Highway Administration, the design of the future permanent bridge has been 95 percent completed, and a design for a temporary by-pass bridge has been completed.
Comments on the project must be received or postmarked by Aug. 22.
