LIHUE — A 110-mile bike ride to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS will take place next weekend.
Hosted by Malama Pono Health Services, the Paradise Ride Kauai will leave Aug. 6 from the Courtyard Kauai Coconut Beach in Kapaa.
This is a fully supported bicycle ride, not a race, through some of Kauai’s most beautiful areas. The first 55 miles will take the bikers through the east and south sides the island. On Aug. 7, bikers will take to the east and the North Shore, riding another 55 miles.
The ride attracts people from Hawaii, the mainland, Japan, Europe, Canada and Australia. For less-experienced cyclists, Malama Pono offers a “design your own ride” option, allowing participants to shorten the distance to five or 10 miles.
There are rest stops along the bike routes providing water, snacks, and lunches for the cyclists.
Cyclists need only bring their bicycles and helmet. Malama Pono Health Services, along with many sponsors and volunteers, will supply three meals a day, snacks, and beverages, gear and mechanical assistance, safety escorts, post ride massages and showers, and opening and closing celebrations and entertainment.
On Aug. 7, there will be a Keiki Ride, from 8 a.m. to noon, which will start at the Pono Kai Resort and ride along the multi-use path to Kapaa Beach Park and back. Registration is $10 and participants will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag.
Greenstone Project will be performing Aug. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. and tickets are available at www.malama-pono.org or at the following ticket outlets: Tamba Surf Company, Kauai Music & Sound, Antollin G. Apalla Jr. DMD, Inc, The Specific Chiropractic Center – Kauai and MCS Grill in Hanapepe.
VIP tickets are $100 and include dinner buffet and concert, or $25 for the concert only.
Malama Pono Health Services, a nonprofit organization that aims to provide individualized and compassionate health care services and education on Kauai, has been hosting Paradise Ride Kauai since 2006.
Since then, it’s become the organization’s signature fundraiser, raising over $650,000 with more than 1,000 riders and over 20,000 donors.
Funds generated from the ride help support the fight against HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis B&C, and sexually transmitted diseases.
It costs $99 to register for the bike ride, and there is still room to sign up. Check-in begins Aug. 5 at 5:30 a.m.
