LIHUE — A tropical storm watch was issued by the National Weather Service for the islands of Kauai and Niihau, meaning tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours.
According to a news release from the County of Kauai’s Civil Defense Department, the watch was issued as of 5 a.m. Saturday and people are advised to make preparations and monitor weather bulletins in the event the watch is upgraded to a warning.
That includes getting emergency preparedness kits ready and making arrangements to shelter with family or friends if necessary.
According to the Civil Defense release, there are no plans to open shelters as of Saturday morning, but any shelter openings on Kauai will be announced to the media and posted to the Civil Defense website: www.kauai.gov/civildefense.
Potential impacts remain uncertain as of Saturday morning, but the latest forecast indicates Kauai could feel effects of the storm as early as midday Sunday.
All east-facing shores on Kauai are currently under a High Surf Advisory and a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for surrounding waters.
Visitors are encouraged to confirm flight arrangements with their airlines prior to leaving for the airport.
The public is urged to monitor local media for weather updates as conditions develop.
