KILAUEA — From Australia to Mexico to Africa, Travis and Koa Smith of Kauai have traveled the world.
During the entire month of July, the brothers will be chasing daily clues and glory on the Mainland in the live-action reality series, “The Runner.”
“They’ve been on tons of crazy adventures their whole life, and I think this might be the biggest one yet,” said Jill Smith, mother of Travis and Koa.
Koa, 21, is a professional surfer, while his brother Travis, 23, is a former body boarder turned New York model, Jill Smith said. The boys were raised in Kilauea and were home schooled.
“We’re just really curious and really excited how it all plays out,” Smith said.
Traveling is a way of life for them, said their agent Ryan Runke.
“I think they’re going to do well. They’re pretty resourceful kids. They’re pretty creative and highly entertaining,” Runke said. “I can’t imagine this will be too challenging for them, but I guess we’ll see.”
Koa and Travis, whose team name is #BrotherNature, make up one of five teams called Chasers. The Chasers task is to catch The Runner with the help of the audience. Viewers solves daily clues about the whereabouts of The Runner and feed those clues to a team of their choosing on their officials social media platforms. Each team will award $1,000 daily to one fan who assists them with clues.
If the runner is able to avoid the chasers during the month of July, he or she wins a cool $1 million. But if any of the chasers catch the runner, they win $15,000 per day. If the runner avoids capture, a $15,000 bounty is added to the next day. The Runner will run across the Mainland and complete six checkpoints, coast to coast in 30 days.
As of Thursday, the brothers have been cut off from the outside world, Runke said. That means no phones, no devices, no communication, in order to keep the playing field fair for all the teams.
“They’re not allowed outside communication for the entire month because of the show,” Runke said. “Not even I can get a hold of them.”
Jill Smith is rooting for her boys, but said: “It’s gonna be really hard not to be in contact with them for a whole month.”
The Runner airs on go90.com starting July first. Daily episodes run 6 a.m., 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
