POIPU — Zoey Akagi-Bustin of Wahiawa, Oahu, and Rose Huang of Honolulu each fired a 5-over par 77 to finish tied for first place in the gusty tradewinds at the Poipu Bay Golf Course Saturday.
Akagi-Bustin, crossing at 4-over, came back on the back nine, finishing 1-over for the course total 77. The effort was not enough to push her past Huang, and the pair shared co-medalist honors at the USGA Women’s Amateur Sectional Qualifier.
The top female golfers from Hawaii were competing to advance to the prestigious U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships which will be held Aug. 1-7 at the Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pennsylvania.
Taylor Viquelia of Koloa, finishing her junior season at Southern Utah by being named Big Sky Conference Women’s Player of the Year, followed the leaders three strokes back at 78 for first alternate honors.
She was followed by Alanis Sakuma of Kapolei, Oahu, getting the second alternate after tying with Malia Nam of Kailua, Oahu, and Miki Manta of Honolulu. All three golfers carded a 79.
