KOLOA — The impending passage of Tropical Storm Darby caused some changes to the Koloa Plantation Days calendar.
The Mixed Plate — Live Music at Old Koloa Town Courtyard, which was scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday night, was moved to July 31, at the same time.
Sunday morning, the Lawai Beach Resort hosted nearly 40 keiki golfers for free rounds of miniature golf at its rooftop facility during the Keiki Miniature Golf Tournament.
“This is not bad, considering we have that storm out there,” said a Lawai Beach Resort associate. “We have a lot of food so they won’t go hungry.”
The Lawai Beach organizers planned for at least 75 golfers with goodie bags filled with school supplies and other school friendly items, a tradition they started 17 years ago.
Each golfer received a goodie bag, a free hot dog lunch, and eligibility for drawings of special backpack prizes, filled with more school goodies, for the different age groups.
Down the road, the 17th annual Koloa Plantation Days rodeo also went through its paces of setting up for the championship titles in the area of bull riding, keiki events, barrel racing, mutton bustin’ and others. Two uniquely Hawaiian paniolo events were double mugging and Poo Y U, in which steers are roped and tied to a Y-shaped structure, similar to how steers are tied to tree boughs.
Weather permitting, today’s Koloa Plantation Days events will include:
The viewing of Kaneiolouma at the Manokalanipo Royal Observatory, starting at 9 a.m.
Plantation Stule Living: An Open House at the historic Smith Memorial Parsonage, from 4 to 6 p.m., hosted by Rev. Alan Akana of the Koloa Union Church.
A historic plantation days exhibit opens at 6 p.m. at The Shops at Kukuiula with a historic movie about the sugar era starting at 7:30 p.m.
