LIHUE — Nine students from Kauai shared $11,000 in scholarships distributed by the Contractors Association of Kauai Thursday night at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club.
Ryan Moura, Kevin Acob, Dean Brown-Aiwohi, Jayna McClaran, Riley Saiki, Ian Brysen Pagatpatan, Alyssa Jardin, Layton Fleege, and Kylah Gruspe received CAK scholarships.
Moura, a senior construction management student at Colorado Mesa University, received a $2,000 Kenneth Shioi Memorial Scholarship presented by Roy Shioi, Kenneth’s grandson.
Acob, son of Elsie and Felipe Acob of Hanapepe, is a carpentry student at the Kauai Community College, staying home to help the family, and Brown-Aiwohi of Kapaa is returning to school following a 12-year break in the electrical program at KCC with the hope of becoming an electrician. Both Acob and Brown-Aiwohi received $1,000 scholarships.
McClaran, daughter of Jane Esaki and Peter McClaran, was presented the $1,500 Guy Matsunaga Memorial Scholarship and plans to continue her graduate work in architecture at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Riley Saiki, Waimea High School graduate, earned a $1,000 CAK scholarship which will be used in his pursuit of an electrical engineering degree at the University of Portland.
Pagatpatan, of Hanamaulu, received $1,500 for the Hawaii Gas scholarship presented by Lawton Sugihara. The son of Rosalie and Edward Pagatpatan will be using the scholarship to pursue a degree in electrical engineering at the Oregon State University.
Alyssa Jardin, a junior civil engineering major at the University of Portland, received a $500 CAK scholarship. Alyssa is the daughter of Tanya and Marvin Jardin of Lihue.
Layton Fleege received a $1,500 Payton Bryan Chung Memorial Scholarship. He is enrolled in the pre-engineering program at KCC.
Gruspe, a graduate of Waimea High School and the daughter of Chernell Oshiro of Hanapepe, will be attending Honolulu Community College as a pre-architecture major with the help of her $1,000 CAK scholarship.
