Request for funds soured survey
I can’t agree more with Joe’s comments about Gary Hooser’s fund-raising mailing a few weeks ago. I had exactly the same sentiment, but returned the survey with comments about the fund-raising and election timing rationale, without answering the questions.
If Gary or another County Council member reached out to the citizens of Kauai with a timely serious survey, I’m sure the response rate would be significantly better.

Praise to Koloa church
Mahalo to the pastor and entire congregation of the Koloa Union Church for the beautiful upgrade they just finished up. While enhancing their parking lot, they were kind enough to offer a wonderful gift to the Koloa Town community with a major construction and tree trimming project that added a lovely and much needed sidewalk along the entire front of their property.
It makes it a much safer place for children walking to Koloa Elementary and the library. The work was done in a first-class manner and everyone passing by benefits from the church’s generosity of community spirit. Koloa Town has long needed a proper sidewalk along Poipu Road.
Could this be the inspirational beginning of a long overdue sidewalk all the way to the traffic circle?

County travel budget seems excessive
Regarding TGI article (July 3) on county travel budget:
How to assess is $800,000 too much annually for officials, employees travel and training? Simple math: The mayor’s trip to Washington and New York cost $4,000 per person.
Budget could send 200 employees on same trip. Maybe West Coast is cheaper, say half as much? We could send 400 employees to West Coast. Well, maybe just interisland Oahu at $1,000 per trip? Send 800 employees! How many people work for county? Seems excessive to me!
Especially on the backs of residents who have seen property taxes sky rocket and county fees being tagged on everywhere! And they can’t even maintain my road? Forget it!
