Male visitor dies snorkeling at Tunnels Beach

HAENA — Kauai police report that a male visitor died while snorkeling in waters off Makua Beach, also known as Tunnels, on Wednesday afternoon.

Police have identified him as James McMahon, 66, of Texas.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., lifeguards located the man unresponsive roughly 300 yards off shore. They brought him to shore and began CPR.

Firefighters and medics soon joined the effort but were unable to resuscitate the victim.

He was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.
