SAN DIEGO — The man charged in a crash that killed a Kauai High School graduate in San Diego last month has pleaded guilty.
Roy Dunkin, 51, pleaded guilty on Sept. 2 to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence, causing injury to more than one person, said Tanya Sierra, a spokeswoman for the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.
He is charged in the death of Lucas Makana Riley, 24, who graduated from Kauai High School in 2010.
About 7 p.m., Aug. 20, Dunkin, from Ramona, California, was driving a full-size GMC Denali HD pickup heading north along state Route 67 when he crossed the center lane into the southbound lane, according to reports.
The pickup first hit a Buick sedan and then collided head-on with Riley’s vehicle, a Mini Cooper.
Dunkin originally pleaded not guilty on Aug. 24 to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing great bodily injury.
He was in jail in lieu of a $2 million bail, but his bail was revoked.
Dunkin will be before the San Diego Superior Court on Nov. 4 for a sentencing hearing. He faces a maximum term of 13 years and eight months in prison.
A celebration of life for Lucas Riley is 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the National Botanical Tropical Gardens. There will be a paddle out at 2 p.m. at Kukuiula Small Boat Harbor.
