HAENA — A man from Texas died while snorkeling in waters off Makua Beach, also known as Tunnels, on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The man was identified as James McMahon, 66.
Lifeguards located the man unresponsive roughly 300 yards off shore about 4:30 p.m. They brought him to shore and began CPR.
Firefighters and medics soon joined the effort but were unable to resuscitate the victim.
He was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.
This would be Kauai’s 10th drowning this year.
