HANAPEPE — Kazuma Monty Nishie will be at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe next weekend, if at all possible.
Nishie, who celebrated his 101st birthday in July, has been a faithful attendee at the annual memorial service honoring fallen comrades of the 100th Infantry Battalion.
The West Kauai Club 100, 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans, will host the 71st Memorial Service next Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery. The memorial service is traditionally held close to Sept. 29 when the 100th Btn entered combat near Salerno, Italy, and suffered its first loss of a soldier killed in action.
“Please bring a framed picture of the 100th Btn soldier you and your family are representing,” said Susan Honjiyo of the West Kauai Club 100. “We will remember the fallen comrades of the Kauai 100th Infantry Battalion by calling each name. The surviving widow and family and friends are asked to come forward and place a flower on the wreath in the veteran’s memory as the names are recited.”
Prior to the service, the pictures will be placed in front of the pavilion.
“We want to share the faces of these brave and courageous soldiers with everyone who attends the service,” Honjiyo said. “When all of the names are called, and the wreath completed, it will be placed at the cemetery’s flagpole with the help of the Waimea High School JROTC cadets.”
The West Kauai Club 100 is requesting a representative from the families of Bunkichi Matsuyoshi, Fusetsu Miyazaki, Masao Yotsuda and Kazuo Senda assist with the wreath presentation.
Refreshments will be served after the service.
