HULEIA — A Toyota multi-purpose vehicle traveling west on the inner lane of Kaumualii Highway near the Halfway Bridge Friday night flipped and landed on its roof on the westbound side of the roadway. The single-car crash occurred about 9:35 p.m.
The driver, a 19-year-old male of Koloa, was able to exit the vehicle following the crash, while his passenger, a 17-year-old female of Hanapepe, was trapped inside. The woman was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters from the Koloa station and was then taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in an ambulance.
Both the driver and the passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries.
According to a preliminary report, the driver of the Toyota swerved to avoid a vehicle that was merging from the outer to the inner lane of the highway. This caused the Toyota to spin and flip onto its roof.
Following the crash, the two westbound lanes were closed, and police officers directed traffic onto the eastbound lane.
The westbound lanes were reopened about 10:45 p.m.
