KALAHEO — Waimea’s Khrysia Pascual and Kauai’s Brandon Marcos picked up high-point honors Thursday during the air rifle matches at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center and at the Island School range.
Pascual’s performance, including posting a 93 in the prone position, 81 in the standing, and 89 in the kneeling position for a 263 total, set the stage for Waimea girls’ victory by just three points, 1,234 to 1,231 points, over Kauai High School’s girls to claim the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls championship in air riflery at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Led by Kelli Okayama’s high-point performance of 252 (96-70-86), a three-point difference would have forced a shootoff for the title after Waimea girls were upset by the Kapaa girls last week, and Kauai had earlier suffered a loss from Waimea.
Pascual’s performance keeps her at the top of the individualists followed by teammate Robyn Acob who finished the Thursday outing just three points back of Pascual at 260 (95-82-83).
“This was just another match,” Pascual said, collecting and scoring targets during the first relay. “Nothing special. Just go into the round like usual.”
Sean Magoun, Island School air riflery coach, said the computerized Orion Scoring System was made possible through a grant from the National Riflery Association.
“All the schools have a system,” said Marcela Hornos of the Kauai High School coaching staff. “Island School had their own system, and shared one with Kapaa High School. We got a system and Waimea got their own system so all the KIF schools have their own systems. This is really good because it is just like the state. If you’re a member, you can get results almost instantaneously, and it is standardized because it cuts down on the human error.”
Magoun said over at the Island School range, Kapaa boys took the match by 43 points, 1,144 to Island School boys’ 1,101.
Kapaa boys’ high point honors went to Maverick Yadao at 260 (95-77-88). Island School’s top shooter honors went to Tanner Tavares (82-79-83-244).
“The Kapaa female shooters took the team score by default, yet produced some high individual scores,” Magoun said. “Haley Gokan took top honors with a 257 (92-77-88), then Loren Weiner at 247 (92-75-80) and, three points back, Khalie Miranda at 244 (89-72-83). Island School girls included Aliana Ho (75-55-57-187) and Quinn Catlin (66-49-177).”
Over at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, Kauai’s Marcos finished with the day’s high point at 262 (89-88-85) to lead the Kauai boys to the KIF title, 1,242 points to Waimea’s 1,198 points. Waimea’s Braden Kobayashi led the Menehune effort with 250 (85-78-87).
“This one is going to the wire, too,” Hornos said. “Kauai boys need the win to clinch. If Waimea pulls out a win, there will be a shoot-off.”
The winning teams will be heading to the Civilian Marksmanship Program Hawaii High School Athletic Association 2016 Hawaii Air Riflery state championships, Oct. 25 at the Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall on Oahu.
