Mahalo to Coach Dennis Agena for coming to work with Kauai’s aspiring basketball players during the Fall Break. Karen Matsumoto said he’ll be back again in the spring.
The trip to Kapaa High School was fruitful as it coincided with the farmers market at The Coconut Marketplace, and a stop at Bobby V’s (his pizzas get baked in a double-decker oven he got from Candlestick Park) new location.
It was a pleasant surprise to see Nelson Ka‘ai doing his trained pigeons thing with fresh coconuts in his palm. He said only the pigeons do it, and of the pigeons, only two come to his hand, one being tame enough so he can cuddle it.
Of course, earlier, Nelson was doing his conch shell opening at the All Saints’ celebration of Holy Sovereigns with Leilani Bond-Low and Kamalani Bond Montanana (Larry Rivera’s granddaughter who is the namesake of the song made well-known by the Makaha Sons of Niihau).
Larry and Gloria Rivera are heading to Oregon for an “Aloha Friday” gig at the Whirled Pies Downtown (also known as Coxmic), Oct. 22. And what’s with the “Uketoberfest?” We should check it out.
We got the Matsuri from 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Kauai Veterans Center, and of course the Haunted House on Friday evening and Saturday at the Kukui Grove Center.
