LIHUE — Koloa Redskins Mitey Mite’s Benjamin Baxter pulled in a pass from his quarterback Keanu Kanoho and cradled the pigskin for a 55-yard scoring run Sunday at Vidinha Stadium.
He followed the score in the fourth quarter with a point-after boot that split the uprights at the 8:52 mark.
The Koloa score prevented a shutout as the Lihue Red Raiders celebrated an 18-8 final reading in the Mitey Mite division that opened a five-game series for the Kauai Pop Warner Football League.
Earlier in the day, Lihue scored two touchdowns in the opening quarter and added a score in the second period to leave the field with an 18-0 lead at the break.
Lynden Kealoha started the first quarter scoring flurry when he stripped the ball from the Redskins ball carrier and ran it back 70 yards for the opening touchdown. The point-after on the score at the 5:19 mark failed.
Racen Pegeder found the end zone with 2:04 remaining in the first quarter after taking the handoff from Kaimana Kaui and running the pigskin for 38 yards. The point-after failed and the Lihue Red Raiders Mitey Mites took a 12-0 bulge at the buzzer.
Pegeder kept the ball and bulled for a yard to tap the end zone for the second time with 1:02 showing on the intermission to wrap up the Lihue scoring.
The 18-8 victory was the first win for Lihue Mitey Mites who improve to 1-1-1 on the season following an 8-8 tie with the Hanapepe Colts during the season opener and dropping to Kapaa, 7-0, two weeks ago.
Koloa drops to 1-2 after its sole 30-13 win over the Kekaha Titans, two weeks ago.
Game results for the remaining four games, including the flag football’s second-to-last matchup, will appear in a future issue of The Garden Island.
The next KPWFL games will play Sunday at Vidinha Stadium starting at 8 a.m. when the Kapaa Eagles junior varsity squares off against the Koloa Redskins.
