Unfair that US foots Japan’s bill
The United States spends $5.5 billion per year to provide military defense to Japan.
Under the defense treaty, the United States is obligated to defend Japan, even if Japan provokes another country such as China, yet there is no reciprocal clause in the treaty.
As long as the United States military is providing defense to Japan, the United States must require that United States citizens are given the right to live, work, study and operate a business in Japan, on an equal basis to Japanese citizens.
If Japan does not agree to provide U.S. citizens these rights, Japan should simply be declared a territory of the United States, as the U.S. military is already in control of the country.
It is unfair that Hawaii and United States taxpayers are footing the bill for Japan’s security, as a result of Japan’s bad behavior in World War II, yet U.S. citizens cannot benefit from the fruits of the security.

Replace yellow sodium lights
I’ve noticed the extremely bright, harsh LED streetlights going up around the South Shore now. I urge KIUC and the county to reconsider replacing the yellow sodium lights with these!
Please at least consider more yellow and dimmer LED lights with carefully directed beams. The lights going up now create a lot of glare that is actually a distraction while driving at night. The blue-white LEDs you are using scatters through the atmosphere further and creates more light pollution at night, spoiling our gorgeous night skies. These LEDs have also been suspected to cause sleeping and health problems in some studies for both humans and wildlife.
Please reconsider before you get too far along in this project! There is an article by Civil Beat about some of the problems this is causing in Honolulu. The American Medical Association also warns of health and environmental damage from LED street lighting that is not carefully done.
I get that LED lights are far more energy efficient, just do it right!
