– The Garden Island is asking the same three questions of every candidate for the House of Representatives, to help residents decide who to vote for on Nov. 8.
Victoria Franks is the Republican candidate for District 16, which covers Niihau, Lehua, Koloa and Waimea. The candidate is running on a platform that includes providing timely and accurate information, protecting local fishing, hunting and improving education.
TGI: What strengths will you bring to the House of Representatives?
Franks: I currently work for a non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to serve the needs of people.
I listen to people on a personal level and take action. I am currently serving on the mayor’s homeless solutions team. I am involved in suicide prevention, underage drinking and drug awareness, food pantry, placing homeless families in housing, community outreach and children’s and youth camps. I studied government, economics and business as well as working in the community in all those areas.
TGI: What do you see as the top two priorities for your district?
Franks: As I talk to people within my district, I’ve realized that readily available health care and emergency services is a top concern — which includes keeping KVMH open. Our people are more important than profits.
Secondly, our schools desperately need updating including cooling systems, building repairs and renovations.
TGI: As a legislator, what would you do to improve the lives of the people you represent?
Franks: Many people have expressed to me that they feel forgotten, left behind and neglected.
They feel abandoned and that their needs are not being met — that no one is listening to them. As representative, I will listen and address the needs of the people of District 16 — not special interest groups or someone’s “agenda.”
I will support our Kauai ohana and family values. I will support common-sense legislation while planning for the future of Kauai.
