WAILUA — Sunday’s run at the Wailua MotoCross track was a way to give back to the community, said Devin Parado, the president of the Kauai MotoCross Association.
“This is a way we can support our community,” Parado said. “This is a charity race where registration is through canned goods instead of money. This all falls back to family and helping others.”
About 30 racers took advantage of the out-of-season race to get acquainted with the track that will open for its season Dec. 4.
Wes Perreira of the Hawaii Foodbank Kauai Branch, said 150 pounds of food was collected for the transition race to help feed Kauai’s hungry people.
“This is the first race of the season,” Parado said of the December opener. “It will be a full-course race, including jumps. The season starts with this race and runs until the Labor Day races. That race closes the season.”
The benefit race also gave riders an opportunity to get to know the association’s new president and some of his initiatives to improve the track and benefits for its riders.
“This is a real good sport,” Parado said. “It teaches riders, especially the younger ones, mental focus, and it’s definitely about fitness.”
Safety is always paramont and the young riders are given lessons in reading flags from monitors placed strategically around the track.
