KAPAA — Genny Moura of Kapaa said her hair will be “perfect” for Christmas.
“I get a free haircut,” Moura said Sunday at the Kapaa Beach Park.. “Haircuts are expensive. Windy, she gave me her card for a discount, cut it in layers so it will grow out perfect for Christmas.”
Windy Kirifi was offering free haircuts on a first-come, first-serve basis at the ‘Ohana Christian Fellowship Day of Thanksgiving at the Kapaa Beach Park.
“I’ve been doing this service for all my life,” Kirifi said. “I’ve done this for the church for the past 14 years. Before that, I just did it on my own. I look forward to doing this every year.”
The Day of Thanksgiving offered free lunch, clothing, linen, household goods, music, worship, and fellowship for anyone on the Sunday leading to Thanksgiving.
Kimo Rosen with his dog Ivana, newly named following Donald Trump’s election to the presidency, was among the more than hundred people who gathered to enjoy Thanksgiving under a canopy of music, words of worship, and the talented Frank Bejo whose hands brought life to canvas against the backdrop of a sermon.
“This is really good,” Rosen said. “I got a free haircut, a free lunch, and music. In the past, they even had a hula show. This is really a good thing people are doing.”
Kawika Cutcher, delivering the pre-meal blessing, said ‘Ohana Christian Fellowship does the service twice a year, the next one being the Day of Hope coinciding with Easter.
More Thanksgiving meals are on the calendar as The Salvation Army hosts its annual Thanksgiving Community Luncheon Wednesday at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall, and the Hanapepe Corps, 4465 Puolo Road, next to the Hanapepe Stadium.
The free lunch with entertainments starts at 11 a.m. at the convention hall and 11:30 a.m. at the Hanapepe Corps.
On Thanksgiving Day, the Kapaa Interfaith Association will host a Thanksgiving service starting at 10 a.m. at the All Saints Episcopal Church followed by the Thanksgiving Luncheon starting at 11 a.m. at the All Saints Gym. Home deliveries to the elderly and home-bounds are available with advance notice.
On Thanksgiving Day afternoon, the Anaina Hou team will host a free holiday dinner for those in need of an ‘ohana to share the day with. Blessing will start at 4 p.m. with dinner of turkey, gravy, stuffing and side dishes being served while supplies last.
