KAPAA — As the elderly continue to age, the need for caregivers and volunteers increases.
The AARP is hosting a free event on Dec. 14 titled “AARP in Action” which will take place at the Courtyard Kauai at Coconut Beach Resort from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The event will provide information about how volunteers can help people in their community along with the benefits of becoming an AARP member.
Janice Bond, the team leader for AARP Kauai, urges the public to give back and help those are in need of care and assistance.
“This is for anybody in the community,” Bond said. “What they’re doing is, the AARP from Honolulu is coming to meet with anybody in AARP and in the community who is interested in volunteering.”
“We need to have more caregivers and we need to have younger adults that see the services and benefits for AARP in the community,” Bond told The Garden Island. “A lot of our volunteers are aging, so we want to bring in new people.”
Bond and the AARP hosts events like this throughout the year to promote volunteerism in the Kauai community in hopes of inspiring others to give back. Caregiving is a difficult thing to do without support or proper training, and Bond wants that to change.
“As our community ages and most of them want to age in place, it’s a concern,” Bond said. “Many families need caregivers.”
The free event will have refreshments and free breakfast provided for those who attend. RSVPs are required and can be made by calling (877) 926-8300 or visiting http://aarp.event.com/action12-14 to RSVP.
