HANAPEPE — Kaleb Pryor of the Waialua Bull Pups must really like Kauai, said Thomas Mortenson, president of the Waialua Pop Warner Association Sunday at the Hanapepe Stadium.
The Bull Pups arrived for a visit Saturday and participated in an in-season game against the Mitey Mite Koloa Redskins Sunday during the games hosted by the Kauai Pop Warner Football League.
“This is a first,” said Teddy Arroyo, KPWFL president. “We’ve never had a visiting in-season team before. The Waialua team arrived Saturday and spent the day sight-seeing before coming to the field to play.”
Keola Seumanutafa-Bryant pulled in two touchdown passes from quarterback Wyatt Crowder and bulled two yards for a touchdown of his own to lead the Bull Pups’ 31-8 victory in the hot sun at Hanapepe.
Crowder hit Seumanutafa-Bryant on scoring strikes of 65 yards and 34 yards in the first quarter to get on the scoreboard. Tau Espenisa booted the point-after following the first score and Crowder ran in the second PAT for the 15-0 bulge at the break.
Midway through the third quarter, Seumanutafa-Bryant took over the QB spot and bulled two yards for the score with Espenisa booting the PAT for the 23-0 go-ahead.
Keanu Kanoho broke the ice for Koloa in the third quarter, connecting with Kekila Kealoha on a five-yard hit in the end zone to prevent the shutout. Benjamin Baxter split the uprights on the point-after for Koloa’s eight points.
But the Bull Pups were not done yet as Pryor, who earlier intercepted a Koloa pass and ran it back to set up Seumanutafa-Bryant’s two-yard TD, took a reverse from Dayton Blaize Gaboya and swept the leftside for a 25-yard score, Espenisa splitting the goalposts on the point-after boot for the 31-8 final.
“You can count how many tackles Kaleb has during the season at home,” Mortenson said. “I don’t know what happened to him, down here. He’s been all over the field, including that interception, and scoring a touchdown. He must really like it here.”
Arroyo said the Hanapepe Colts Junior Varsity team is also on a trip this weekend, playing for the district honors.
“Depending on what happens to them, they could be playing a Honolulu team here Saturday,” Arroyo said. “We close our regular season here at Hanapepe Stadium, and have the possibility of playing the regional finals.”
On Dec. 3, the Kauai Pop Warner Football League will host the Harold Naumu Bowl featuring 16 teams at Hanapepe Stadium.
