LIHUE — Jacy Youn, Boys & Girls Club executive director, interrupted the quarterly ‘Ohana Night potluck Thursday evening at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall social hall.
The brief interruption was sufficient time for Youn to introduce Diane Keeler, store manager of the Lihue Walmart, who unrolled a big check for $40,000 from the Walmart Foundation’s Hawaii State Giving Council.
The funds will be used to support the Boys & Girls Club, Kauai Area’s Ho‘omauhui Positive Youth Development Project. The afterschool enrichment program centers around the organization’s five core impact areas: character and leadership development, education and career, arts and culture, sports and fitness and healthy lifestyles.
The Boys & Girls Club on Kauai serves more than 1,000 youth annually, many of whom are at-risk or low-income.
“We believe in giving back to the communities we serve,” Keeler said. “On behalf of the more than 4,000 Walmart associates in Hawaii, it is our privilege to collaborate with the Boys & Girls Club, Kauai Area. Walmart is proud to support this important community program for our island keiki.”
Youn noted that most parents pay a nominal fee for their children’s enrollment in the club, but it takes a lot more to keep the club operating.
“The Boys & Girls Club is very grateful for Walmart’s support of our youth on Kauai,” she said.
“Walmart’s generosity helps support our fundraising efforts so we can continue to provide quality programming for our kids through the Ho‘omauhui project.”
