As part of the Lonesome Grave project, members of the Kauai United Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association will be decorating headstones with flowers at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery this afternoon.
The floral-decoration project started when some of the members noticed graves received no attention during veteran ceremonies at the cemetery.
The Lonesome Grave project kicks in and headstones are decorated in time for the annual Veterans Day service, which starts at 11 a.m. Friday at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe, hosted by the Kauai Veterans Council.
Stacie Chiba, assistant manager at Kukui Grove Center, said their maintenance supervisor is a veteran, and to honor him as well as all veterans on the island, they have arranged to have American flags flying along the Kaumualii Highway side of the parking lot as well as along the Palm Avenue, through Veterans Day.
