KILAUEA — Brooke Hemingway admits she was skeptical when someone recommended that she try Plexus.
“I’m medically trained, and I was used to the idea that all we needed to do to be healthy was eat right and exercise,” she said. “But I wasn’t getting the results I wanted.”
After giving birth to her fifth child back in July 2015, Hemingway, a former ICU nurse at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, realized she needed to bring balance back to her life.
So in October, Hemingway decided to try Plexus Worldwide, a company that sells plant-based supplements to help people lose weight and gain energy.
Hemingway, who lives in Kilauea and teaches fitness classes at Kauai Athletic Club, started her own Plexus business, selling the product via network marketing.
“It changed my life and I wanted people to feel the same way I felt,” she said.
In the year she’s been selling Plexus, she has garnered a team of 2,200 people from across the nation. Her success has distinguished her as a Diamond Ambassador, which is a group of the highest earners in the company.
There are 100 Diamond Ambassadors worldwide, said Lauren Vargas, a spokesman for Plexus.
Plexus has a total of 400,000 ambassadors.
As a reward, Hemingway went to Texas to take part in a leaders’ retreat, hosted by Plexus.
The retreat rewards the ambassadors for their hard work by giving them an all-expense-paid vacation, complete with entertainment provided by the comedian, Brain Regan, and prizes.
Hemingway said she never intended to make a business out of Plexus.
“I just needed some help health-wise, and that fueled my fire to help people,” she said. “I really believe in these products and the company.”
She speaks from example. Her husband is the chief emergency room doctor at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, who no longer has to pull extra shifts at work because of Hemingway’s success.
“He used to work 60 to 80 hours a week, and he missed a lot of our children’s growing up,” she said. “When people work several jobs, they miss out on life, and that’s my biggest motivation.”
