PUHI — Carrice Caspillo Gardner never had anything like the Kauai Apprenticeship Day and Career Fair when she was in high school.
“It would have been nice to see what was out there (as far as career choices),” said Gardner, Gov. David Ige’s Kauai liason.
Kauai Community College, in partnership with the County of Kauai, Workforce Development Board, and the trade unions hosted the first Kauai Apprenticeship Day and Career Fair on Wednesday.
“They have this on Oahu,” said Bobby Ayonon of the Workforce Development Board and CEO of Kauai Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. “I got started as an apprentice, and pushed to have this take place on Kauai for the students, here.”
Leonard Hoshijo, deputy director of the state’s Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, Workforce Development Division, provided an overview of the apprenticeship programs in the state while representatives of trade unions offered more personal interaction through breakout sessions.
A crew from the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative allowed hands-on and a closer look at the equipment they use in work with high voltage and its infrastructure. They were joined by people from the Kauai Plumbers and Pipefitters.
