NAWILIWILI — There was a lot of food to load onto the pickup Wednesday morning, but William Harrington, director of Nana’s House and Hale Ho‘omalu, did not even have to roll up the sleeves of his dress shirt.
He got help from the Matson Kauai staff in loading the 1,900 pounds of food collected by the Matson ‘ohana.
“This should help keep the shelves filled for about a week,” Harrington said. “Or, it could be gone in as little as two days. The need for (nonperishable) food varies depending on the people.”
Nana’s House offers a food pantry program three times a week, and Hale Ho‘omalu has a food pantry program twice a week. Food from the Matson Kauai food collection will go toward those pantry programs that offer food to anyone who needs it, Harrington said.
In addition to the 1,900 pounds of food, Patrick Ono, Matson district manager Kauai, provided a check for $1,000 from the Matson Foundation.
“Since our founding in 1882, Matson has supported the needs of the communities we serve, and in which our employees live and work,” Ono said.
He said Matson has supported Child & Family Service, under which Nana’s House and Hale Ho‘omalu operate, through an annual fundraising event on Oahu, and through Matson’s support of both the Aloha United Way, and the Kauai United Way.”
Ono said the funds match the Matson-sponsored food and cash contribution drive led by Reni Domingo of the Matson Nawiliwili office.
Momi Machado, Nana’s House manager, said Wednesday’s contribution of food is nearly double last year’s receipt.
In a history of food drive for Nana’s House and Hale Ho‘omalu provided by Domingo, Matson raised 620 pounds of food in 2013, increasing to 1,100 pounds in 2015 with the Matson Foundation providing $1,000. In 2016, the food collection total came to 1,900 pounds, and the Matson Foundation providing $1,000.
