KAPAIA — An 18-year-old exchange student who was visiting from Oahu was injured when she fell 150 feet Tuesday afternoon while hiking on an unestablished trail near Wailua Falls.
Engine 2, Truck 2, Rescue 3, Air 1, Battalion Chief 3, police officers, medics and personnel from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources responded to the 12:25 p.m. rescue call.
Initially, the first responders were unable to locate the victim in the forest reserve. After meeting with the man who had contacted authorities about seeing the woman fall, Rescue 3, Engine 2 personnel and the male hiker walked down the trail and found the woman on the Lihue side of the river.
The woman was airlifted from the area by Air 1 in a Billy Pugh rescue net, and flown to a nearby landing zone. From there, she was transported via ambulance to Wilcox Hospital where she was treated for minor scrapes and abrasions.
Police closed a portion of Ma‘alo Road between mile marker three and the end of the road for an hour to support the rescue operation.
