A bus pass and some warm clothes are all that’s needed to deliver Christmas cheer to a young mom and her infant daughter.
Kuulei is a cute 3-month-old baby who is very much loved by her 16-year-old mother, Tammy.
Although Tammy loves her daughter, she is having difficulty providing for her due to lack of income, transportation and support of family. Mother and baby have a lot of needs.
Mom and baby live with mom’s father. However, she doesn’t eat with him because he always complains about lack of money to feed everybody. She oftentimes eats only one meal a day or she goes over to her neighbor’s house who will feed her, which isn’t healthy since she’s breastfeeding Kuulei.
Mother has no transportation and always has to catch the bus with the baby to go to appointments. A bus pass for the mother would be most helpful. And as the weather is getting cold, some warm clothes for the baby would be great.
The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund was established in the early 1980s to help people like Sam during the holidays. Donations to the Christmas Fund are distributed by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at local stores to make wishes come true.
Each donated dollar is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrators collecting salaries. Volunteers run the show.
Anyone making a donation of $50 or more may have their picture presenting the check to Zonta published in TGI.
Only monetary donations are accepted. Checks payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. For more information, call Dimples Kano at 822-4517.

Others in need of help this holiday season:
w A family of parents and five children is living temporarily in a two-bedroom apartment with other family members who are renting. The father has a job, but uses a majority of his earnings to pay for gas and help pay utility bills. Their car has been having troubles. The mother can’t get employment because they can’t afford childcare, so she stays at home to watch her youngest. This family could use some new clothes and toys for children.
w Joshua is an 8-year-old male in foster care. He has experienced a lot of trauma, including exposure to domestic violence, substance abuse and suicide of a family member in his short life. He could benefit from receiving outdoor toys such as a baseball and bat, soccer ball and gear to help him learn positive coping skills.
