INDIANAPOLIS — The No. 12 University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team (22-5) will be heading to the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” for the NCAA Tournament’s First and Second Rounds.
The Rainbow Wahine will open against the PAC-12’s USC (18-13) on Friday at 12:30 pm HT in the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn. Host team and No. 2 seeded Minnesota (25-4) will face North Dakota (26-9) at 3:00 pm HT.
The Rainbow Wahine earned the Big West Conference’s automatic bid after winning their second-straight and ninth overall BWC title with a 15-1 conference record. It is UH’s 35th overall and 24th-straight NCAA appearance.
Last season, Hawaii defeated both TCU and Texas A&M in College Station, Texas in the First and Second Rounds. UH then swept two-time defending NCAA champion Penn State in the Round of 16. Then the ‘Bows’ run in the tournament was thwarted in the Des Moines Regional Final by Minnesota in a four-set loss to the Golden Gophers.
UH women’s basketball visits UCLA on Sunday
HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team will face a top-10 opponent for the second consecutive game when it tips off against No. 9/10 UCLA on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. (HT) in Los Angeles’ Pauley Pavilion.
The Rainbow Wahine, coming off a loss to No. 7 Mississippi State, are 2-5 entering the contest while UCLA enters the game with a 5-1 record and a 3-0 mark at home.
Sunday’s game will be a re-match of the 2016 NCAA Tournament first-round game between the Bruins and Rainbow Wahine, when UCLA advanced with a 66-50 victory. Hawaii is 1-7 all-time against UCLA — its lone win was a 70-66 victory in November of 2002.
The Rainbow Wahine are led by senior Briana Harris and junior Sarah Toeaina, who each average 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. Sunday’s game will be the third this season against a Pac-12 opponent for Hawaii. The ‘Bows lost 76-44 in their season-opener at USC and fell 86-49 to Oregon on Nov. 26.
Hawaii 2nd in Big West Commissioner’s Cup standings
IRVINE, Calif. – Through the conclusion of the fall championship season, the University of Hawai‘i sits in second place in the Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings, behind only defending champion UC Santa Barbara.
Hawai‘i owns a 120.0-point average, its highest through the fall season since returning to the Big West in the 2012-13 season. The ‘Bows claimed the women’s volleyball championship and finished in the top five in women’s soccer and women’s cross country.
UC Santa Barbara holds a four-point edge over Hawai‘i with 124.0 points. The ‘Bows are followed by Cal Poly (114.), CSU Fullerton (100.0), CSUN (100.0), Long Beach State (97.5), UC Davis (94.0), UC Irvine (86.0), and UC Riverside (58.0).
