LIHUE — What could future cars look like? What could they do? This is the question that the 6th annual Toyota Hawaii Dream Car Art Contest is asking keiki 15 years old and younger.
A special perk for this year’s winners is a 3D print of their winning design by the College of Engineering at the University of Hawaii. Underscoring this new partnership and its commitment to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), Toyota Hawaii is donating $5,000 to the College of Engineering.
An esteemed panel of judges will select the winners of this year’s THDCAC.
Locally renowned artists Kamea Hader and Mark Chai, and Assistant Dean Song K. Choi Ph.D. from the UH College of engineering will join a panel of celebrity judges including Justin Cruz, Brenton Awa, and Lacy Deniz.
Entries will be accepted until Jan. 13. After the entry period, 10 entries in each age category will be selected for final judging in February. The age categories are: Under 8, 8-12, 12-15.
The Toyota Hawaii grand-prize winner in each age category will win an iPad mini 4, while the first and second runners-up will each receive $100. The top three entries from each age group also will be entered in the international competition where winners could win an all-expenses paid trip to Japan.
Hawaii has a history of sending winners to Japan, including Emily Stone of Kaneohe in 2013, Teah Laupapa of Kapolei and Emma Thain of Koloa in 2014.
Last year’s international Toyota Dream Car Art World Contest attracted more than 875,000 entries from 81 different countries. Toyota Hawaii received 878 entries in its local competition last year.
“We very much believe in nurturing our creative thinkers of tomorrow,” said Rick Ching, president of Toyota Hawaiʻi. “It’s an exciting addition for us to have the 3D print of the winning designs through our new partnership with the College of Engineering.”
Artists, 15 and under, may submit hand-drawn artwork on 11-inch by 17-inch paper to any Toyota Hawaii dealership or mailed to Toyota Dream Car Art Contest, c/o Toyota Hawaii, P.O. Box 2788, Honolulu, HI 96803
