KAPAA — After months of deliberation and collecting community input, the Hawaii Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt the update and extension of its strategic plan.
The plan was adjusted to meet new shifts in federal accountability and current needs toward supporting student achievement.
The Every Student Succeeds Act law provides states with more flexibility. It replaces the No Child Left Behind Act.
“Hawaii’s public school students are at the heart of this plan,” said Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi in a news release. “Our priority is to ensure that all of our decisions revolve around making sure we are supporting their college and career goals.”
The BOE will use the plan to guide the Hawaii State Department of Education from 2017-20.
Kapaa High School Principal Daniel Hamada said he has reviewed the strategic plan and likes it.
“I really believe that it kind of gives us a refocus to know that we’re on the right track and I feel very good about that,” he said.
The updated plan includes:
w A commitment to closing opportunity and achievement gaps to attain equity and excellence in public education.
w Flexibility in implementation in diverse communities given a variety of strengths and needs.
w A focused set of indicators to track progress with three-year targets.
