The Rainbow Wahine won the five-set match in Minneapolis — 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 16-25 and 15-13.
Nikki Taylor led UH offensively with 23 kills. Khalia Lanier was USC’s kills leader with 26.
Taylor, Natasha Burns and Emily Maglio each had six blocks for UH. Madison Murtagh had seven for USC.
Norene Iosia totaled 46 assists for Hawaii. Reni Meyer-Whalley had 31 for USC.
Savanah Kahakai had 19 digs for UH. Taylor Whittingham had 32 for Southern Cal.
Hawaii will play No. 2 Minnesota in the second round today at 7 p.m. ET (2 p.m. HST)
Minnesota defeated North Dakota in straight sets — 25-21, 25-12 and 25-20.
