LIHUE — The Bayanihan Clinic Without Walls, a nonprofit organization that provides medical care to new immigrants, the uninsured and economically-disadvantaged residents, will hold a community health fair at the Kauai Veterans Center from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The health fair will feature free screenings for diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension and osteoporosis, and other services such as dental and physical therapy, glucose testing and medical consultation.
Attendees will be eligible for prizes and a drawing for a round-trip ticket to Las Vegas.
“This health fair will provide medical care and related services to those on Kauai who are most in need of them,” said Dr. Charlie Sonido, volunteer BCWW physician. “This is a part of our mission to give back to the underserved people of our community, particularly those who have little or no access to health care.”
Volunteer medical professionals will also educate attendees about where to go for existing healthcare resources in the community and to remind them of the importance of keeping themselves healthy and maintaining an active lifestyle.
BCWW was founded in 1997 by a group of immigrant Filipino physicians on Oahu as a project of the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii and has conducted a number of free community health fairs over the years.
This year marks BCWW’s first health fair on Kauai, where there is a sizeable Filipino community. Data from the 2010 U.S. Census shows that nearly one in every three Kauai resident is Filipino or part Filipino.
The Kauai Veterans Center is at 3216 Kapule Highway. Admission is free.
